PM Modi escalates attack on Mamata in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi waves at supporters in Barasat, West Bengal, on May 28, 2024.

With only the seventh phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls left to go, the Bharatiya Janata Party is giving their campaigns a final push.

While addressing a poll rally in Barasat on Tuesday, PM Modi claimed no corruption cases were charged against the NDA government.

“Not a single scam happened under BJP-led Central Government in last 10 years... Centre providing all help to West Bengal Government to handle situation in aftermath of Cyclone Remal,” he said. He also added that the Centre is “exploring legal options on how to return money looted by TMC from people of Bengal”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s response to the Calcutta High Court order invalidating all OBC certificates issued by the state government since 2010, and wondered whether goons would be sent after judges who deliver unfavourable orders.

“The TMC has betrayed the trust of the OBCs. The Calcutta High Court has exposed this. The Calcutta High Court said that it was unconstitutional to give OBC certificates to 77 Muslim communities. The TMC (government) has snatched the rights of lakhs of OBC youths, which were guaranteed by the Constitution but given to ‘vote jihadis’ overnight. It has belittled the efforts of Babasaheb Ambedkar,” Modi said at an election meeting in Ashoknagar in North 24 Parganas district.

He, further, added: “After the court order came, the TMC chief minister opposed it. I was surprised to see the kind of statements she made. She questioned some of the judges and even questioned the judiciary. Will goons be sent after the judges now? The TMC is throttling the judiciary in Bengal. The TMC cannot digest the truth and targets anyone who exposes their misdeeds,” he said.

In Phase 7 of Lok Sabha elections, nine Lok Sabha constituencies from West Bengal are going to polls on June 1, namely, Barasat, Basirhat, Diamond Harbour, Dum Dum, Jaynagar, Jadavpur, Kolkata Dakshin, Kolkata Uttar and Mathurapur.

TMC supremo and national general secretary Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, respectively, will cast votes in the final phase
