Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to officially enter the electoral fray as he files his nomination for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat on April 29, according to sources within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Anand Dwivedi, the Chief of BJP in Lucknow, confirmed that Singh will initiate the nomination process from the Uttar Pradesh BJP office, located opposite the Vidhan Sabha. The event will witness Singh, accompanied by Ministers, the Mayor, senior party officials, and supporters, embarking on a motorised chariot procession to the collectorate to formalize his candidacy.
Rajnath Singh, eyeing his third consecutive term as a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Lucknow, has a significant political trajectory. Prior to his successful bid for Lucknow in 2014, Singh secured victory in the Lok Sabha elections from Ghaziabad in 2009.
The Lucknow constituency has a storied political legacy, formerly represented by stalwart leaders like the late Lalji Tandon and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who held the seat for five consecutive terms before retiring from active electoral politics.
Additionally, O.P. Srivastava, the BJP's candidate for the Lucknow (East) Assembly bypolls, is slated to file his nomination on April 26. The bypoll was necessitated by the untimely demise of Ashutosh Tandon Gopal, the incumbent lawmaker from the constituency.
Lucknow, along with 13 other constituencies, is scheduled to cast its votes on May 20, marking the fifth phase of the seven-phased 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
