The Election Commission has imposed a 48-hour campaigning ban on Congress leader Randeep Surjewala following his controversial remarks about BJP MP Hema Malini. The ban was initiated due to statements made by Surjewala that were deemed "derogatory," "vulgar," and in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
The decision marks the first campaign ban of this Lok Sabha election cycle, highlighting the poll body's enforcement of electoral decorum.
During a rally in Haryana, Surjewala's comments were captured in a video that quickly circulated, drawing criticism for their nature. The BJP reacted by filing a complaint with the Election Commission, labelling the remarks as "vulgar, sexist, and disparaging."
This prompted the EC to review the incident and subsequently issue a show-cause notice to Surjewala.
In his response to the EC, Surjewala denied the allegations, claiming that the video was manipulated and that he had no intention of demeaning Hema Malini.
Despite his defence, the Election Commission proceeded with the sanction, underscoring their commitment to maintaining the respect and dignity of electoral processes.
The ban restricts Surjewala from engaging in any form of public campaigning, including rallies, road shows, and media appearances, and is effective for a period starting from 6 pm on April 16.
This measure is part of the EC's broader efforts to ensure that all parties and candidates adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Model Code of Conduct, particularly concerning the conduct and language used during campaigning.
