Savitri Jindal, a prominent BJP leader and the wealthiest woman in India with a net worth of $33 billion, exercised her voting rights in her hometown of Hisar on Saturday. Accompanied by her youngest son, Naveen Jindal, who is contesting for the BJP from Kurukshetra, Savitri cast her vote at a local polling station.
At 74, Savitri Jindal, chairperson of the Jindal Group established by her late husband Om Prakash Jindal in 1979, expressed confidence in the development trajectory of the country under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
"The country has progressed rapidly under Prime Minister Modi's government," she remarked to the media after casting her vote, expressing optimism about Modi's reelection for a third consecutive term.
Savitri and her son Naveen recently switched their allegiance from the Congress party to the BJP in March, marking the end of their nearly two-decade association with the Congress.
Naveen Jindal, 54, previously represented the Kurukshetra constituency from 2004 to 2014.
In the ongoing general elections, Naveen Jindal is contesting against AAP candidate and former Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Gupta for the Kurukshetra seat.
The AAP is contesting in Haryana in alliance with Congress, with Kurukshetra being allotted to them. The Congress is contesting the remaining nine seats in alliance with the AAP.
Savitri Jindal ventured into politics following her husband's demise and won the 2005 Hisar assembly bypoll, subsequently joining the Haryana government. She later emerged victorious in the 2009 Assembly polls from Hisar and became a minister in 2013.
Polling commenced at 7 a.m. across all ten Lok Sabha seats and a bypoll for the Karnal Assembly seat amidst stringent security measures in the sixth and penultimate phase of the general elections. The voting will continue until 6 p.m., with vote counting scheduled for June 4.
