The political landscape in India is abuzz with reactions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent statements, particularly his remarks suggesting that a Congress-led government would redistribute wealth to specific communities, notably Muslims.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal expressed deep concern over what he views as a historic low in political discourse and called upon the Election Commission to intervene.

Sibal emphasised the gravity of the Prime Minister's speech, highlighting its potential to disappoint millions and its unprecedented nature since the 1950s. He criticised the insinuation that India's minorities are considered infiltrators, juxtaposing it with the rhetoric of unity and development.

Questioning the silence of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on the matter, Sibal stressed that such divisive rhetoric does not align with the ethos of organisations like the RSS. He underscored the need for intellectuals to speak out when the office of the Prime Minister is not accorded the respect it deserves.

Furthermore, Sibal pointed out the irony in the Prime Minister's focus on wealth redistribution when a significant portion of the country's wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small fraction of the population. He called upon the Election Commission to take action against Modi's speech, urging condemnation, notices, and legal measures.

Sibal rejected the accusations made by Modi, asserting that the Congress, under leaders like Manmohan Singh, prioritised the upliftment of marginalised communities, not the exclusive distribution of wealth. He lamented the departure from principles of inclusive development and unity.

The former minister highlighted the importance of focusing political discourse on developmental issues and the progress of the nation. He expressed disappointment in the PM's resort to divisive rhetoric instead of addressing substantive issues.

Prime Minister Modi's remarks, made at a rally in Rajasthan, sparked controversy as he alleged the Congress's intention to distribute citizens' hard-earned assets to certain groups, particularly those with more children. He referenced statements attributed to former PM Manmohan Singh regarding the allocation of resources to minorities.

Singh's remarks, made at the 52nd Meeting of the National Development Council in 2006, emphasised the need for equitable development, with a focus on agriculture, infrastructure, health, education, and the empowerment of marginalised communities, including minorities.

Sibal's appeal for responsible and inclusive political discourse is in line with the views of many who think that national growth depends on unity and development.
