Suraj Pal Amu, the Haryana BJP spokesperson and president of Karni Sena, made headlines on Thursday as he tendered his resignation from the BJP, citing disagreements over the selection of an election candidate in Gujarat.
Known for his controversial remarks, particularly concerning the movie 'Padmavat' in 2018, Amu addressed his resignation letter to BJP president JP Nadda.
In his letter, he expressed dismay over the party's decision to field a candidate in Gujarat who had made derogatory comments about women, which he perceived as an affront to the entire Kshatriya community.
The candidate in question was apparently Parshottam Rupala, BJP's nominee from the Rajkot Lok Sabha constituency and a Union Minister.
Rupala had sparked controversy by suggesting that historical 'maharajas' surrendered to foreign rulers, including the British, and even married their daughters to them. Following backlash, Rupala issued an apology for his remarks.
This isn't the first time Amu has parted ways with the BJP. In 2018, he also resigned from the party's primary membership, albeit his resignation was not accepted.
Amu's association with the BJP dates back to the early 1990s when he held positions within the party's youth wing.
He served as the divisional president of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Sohna from 1990-91 and later as the district general secretary of the same organisation from 1993-96. Since 2018, he had been active as a state spokesperson for the BJP.
Amidst political dynamics and ideological differences, Amu's resignation marks another chapter in his complex relationship with the BJP, reflecting the nuances and tensions within the party and its affiliates.
