The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken action against Congress leader Randeep Surjewala for alleged derogatory remarks against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Hema Malini.
In a complaint filed with the Election Commission, the NCW strongly denounced Surjewala's remarks, calling them misogynistic and offensive to the modesty of a woman. Chairperson Rekha Sharma urged immediate action against Surjewala and requested an Action Taken Report within three days.
Similarly, the Haryana State Commission for Women issued a notice to Surjewala over his comments against Hema Malini. Chairperson Renu W Bhatia condemned Surjewala's statements, describing them as shameful and highlighting the need for him to apologise to Hema Malini. She emphasised that Surjewala's remarks reflect the mentality of certain Congress workers.
In response to the controversy, Hema Malini, before filing her nomination for the Lok Sabha elections, criticised the opposition for targeting popular figures. She emphasised the importance of respecting women and cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an example.
Surjewala, in his clarification, denied any intention to insult or hurt Hema Malini. He accused the BJP's IT department of editing and distorting a video to distract from the failures of the Modi government. Surjewala asserted that his full statement showed respect towards Hema Malini as the daughter-in-law of Dharmendra ji.
