Former Uttar Pradesh DGP Vijay Kumar, who retired from service in January, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday.

Kumar, a 1988-batch IPS officer, gained recognition for his innovative approach to policing, which included a unique focus on lunar cycles.

In August of the previous year, Kumar made headlines when he issued a directive to police officials across districts, instructing them to analyze crime data from UP 112 and Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) during the period of the new moon ('amavasya') and the subsequent week. He emphasized the need to develop strategic plans to address illegal activities based on this analysis.

According to Kumar, most criminal incidents tend to occur during the week before and after the 'Amavasya' in the 'Krishna Paksha' (dark phase of the moon). He underscored the importance of reviewing crime trends during these periods on a monthly basis.

Explaining further, Kumar pointed out that on August 1, there was a full moon, providing ample light from 6 pm to 6 am the following day, which restricted criminal activities. However, starting from August 8, the new moon phase began, lasting until August 16. During this period, darkness prevailed from 6 pm to 6 am, facilitating criminal activities.

He highlighted upcoming 'Amavasya' dates, scheduled for September 14 and October 14, urging officers to maintain vigilance in the week before and after these dates.

Kumar termed this approach 'Panchang' policing, urging law enforcement officials to monitor lunar phases closely. He emphasized that this directive was not only for the police but also for the general public, aiming to promote awareness and ensure a secure environment statewide.

His move to join the BJP marks a new chapter in Kumar's career, bringing his expertise and innovative policing methods to the political arena.
