The Congress party has unveiled its choice for the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, nominating Kishori Lal Sharma, popularly known as KL Sharma, to vie for the seat previously held by Rahul Gandhi, where he suffered defeat in the 2019 elections.
After days of intense speculation and heated debate regarding whether the Congress would nominate members of the Gandhi family for these two seats, the decision was made.
Friday marks the final day for filing nominations for both constituencies, which are scheduled to go to polls on May 20 in the fifth phase of the seven-phase general elections.
Hailing from Punjab's Ludhiana, KL Sharma's association with the Gandhi family runs deep, having served as a trusted manager for the Congress party and Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli during her absence.
Sharma's political journey traces back to 1983 when he entered the electoral fray alongside former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Rae Bareli and Amethi.
Over the years, his ties with the Gandhi family have only strengthened, particularly following Rajiv Gandhi's demise.
In the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024, KL Sharma will face off against BJP stalwart and Union Minister Smriti Irani, the incumbent MP from Amethi.
With the electoral battleground heating up, all eyes will be on Sharma as he steps into the spotlight to carry forward the Congress legacy in Amethi.
Meanwhile, on the final day for nomination filing in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli constituency, the Congress party announced that Rahul Gandhi would contest the seat.
This constituency holds significance as it has been represented by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, for four consecutive terms until she was elected to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.
