BS Yediyurappa, a seasoned figure within the BJP, may have stepped away from formal positions and electoral politics, but his influence within the party's affairs in Karnataka remains significant. As the BJP gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the central leadership again turns to Yediyurappa to navigate various challenges.

Despite his announced retirement from electoral politics, Yediyurappa's role as a central election committee member continues to be crucial. His involvement is particularly notable in candidate selection and managing dissension across multiple constituencies.

With his son, BY Vijayendra, recently appointed as the party's state President, Yediyurappa's task includes solidifying his son's position and addressing criticism surrounding his appointment over more seasoned contenders.

The BJP's reliance on the "Yediyurappa factor" stems from his mass appeal, especially among the influential Lingayat community. His extensive grassroots work and political acumen make him a valuable asset for the party's electoral strategies.

Yediyurappa's imprint is evident in candidate selections for the Lok Sabha polls, with his close associates securing nominations in key constituencies. However, his decisions have not been without controversy, leading to dissent among aspiring candidates who felt overlooked.

Despite his enduring influence, Yediyurappa's leadership has occasionally sparked internal conflicts within the party. Critics accuse him of nepotism and favouritism, while others lament the party's narrow focus on garnering support from the Lingayat community at the expense of broader social outreach.

The BJP's dependence on Yediyurappa has both advantages and drawbacks. While his leadership and appeal bolster the party's electoral prospects, excessive reliance on him has hindered efforts to broaden its support base beyond the Lingayats.

Yediyurappa's pivotal role within the BJP in Karnataka cannot be understated. He has been a driving force behind the party's success in the state, often outperforming when he is at the helm. Despite controversies and age-related concerns that led to his resignation as Chief Minister in 2021, the central leadership continues to recognise his importance, especially during critical electoral phases.

As the BJP prepares for the upcoming polls, Yediyurappa's experience and influence remain invaluable assets, albeit with the recognition of the need for a balanced approach that extends beyond singular community-based politics.
