AI cannot replace live performances: Charlize Theron

The remarks clearly touched a nerve with Theron, who began her own career as a trained ballerina at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York.

Charlize Theron has pulled no punches in her response to Timothée Chalamet’s recent dismissal of opera and ballet, describing his suggestion that "no one cares" about the mediums as a "reckless" assault on the arts. Chalamet sparked a significant backlash during an event in February — right in the thick of his Oscar campaign for Marty Supreme — when he expressed a fear that cinema might go the way of the stage. He argued that theatrical movie-going should avoid becoming like ballet or opera, where he claimed artists are merely struggling to "keep this thing alive" for an indifferent public.

The remarks clearly touched a nerve with Theron, who began her own career as a trained ballerina at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. Speaking to the media, she didn't hide her desire for a face-to-face confrontation. "Oh, boy, I hope I run into him one day," she remarked, before pointing out the irony of his comments in the current technological climate. She noted that while artificial intelligence might be capable of doing Chalamet’s job within a decade, it would never be able to replicate the soul and physical presence of a live dancer on stage.

For Theron, the grievance is personal. Having started her training at the age of four before a knee injury cut her professional dance career short, she spoke candidly about the gruelling reality of the craft. She described the discipline of ballet as "borderline abusive," recalling times she suffered from blood infections and blisters that never had the chance to heal. "I’m literally talking about bleeding through your shoes," she said, emphasising that the "never give up" mindset she forged in the studio is what gave her the toughness required for Hollywood.

Her message to the younger actor was blunt: we shouldn’t be disparaging other art forms, especially those that require such immense physical and mental sacrifice. While Chalamet may view these traditions as fading relics, Theron sees them as the ultimate masterclass in hard work and structure— human elements that no algorithm, or dismissive soundbite, can ever truly replace.
