As the day transitioned into the night in the serene village of Bhoirymbong in Meghalaya, a multitude of music lovers gathered at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival on Friday to enjoy performances by international stars such as Akon and Boney M.
Named for the cherry blossoms that line the streets of the capital during the winter season, the musical celebration commenced at the RBDSA Sports Complex, featuring a thrilling roster of global artists alongside music legends from the North East, including Khasi Bloodz and Jessie Lyngdoh.
R&B sensation Akon headlined the festival's opening night as part of his "Superfan Tour," followed by an electrifying performance by the iconic group Boney M during their "Farewell Tour," providing a rare chance to see the band live.
The event was officially launched by Meghalaya's chief minister Conrad K Sangma, who was joined by Union Minister of DoNER (Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region) Jyotiraditya Scindia and the tourism minister of Meghalaya, Paul Lyngdoh.
"Tourism is a very important part of the overall strategy for our region. And through the department of northeast we are very happy that a lot of support is given and will be given in future," Sangma said.
The evening also witnessed performances by singing sensation Jasleen Royal, international star Lucas, The Great Society, Queen Sensation and Rito Riba.
Like every year, the festival brought together music lovers from different part of the country.
Clean Bandit and acclaimed Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor will perform on day two, followed by a concert by DJ R3HAB.
Local band Khasi Bloodz, SK Korn, and artistes from the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP) will also showcase their talents, underscoring the festival's commitment to promote regional talents.
