Writer-actor and comedian Amy Schumer has responded to recent negative remarks concerning her facial appearance, attributing it to the effects of endometriosis, a condition she is currently grappling with.
Schumer, who was promoting her new show "Life and Beth" on Hulu, found herself amidst a social media discussion regarding her facial appearance following appearances on The Tonight Show and Good Morning America.
In an Instagram post, the 42-year-old candidly shared insights into her health struggles, stating, "Thank you so much for everyone's input about my face! I've enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance, as all women do for almost 20 years. And you're right, it is puffier than normal right now. I have endometriosis, an auto immune disease that every woman should read about."
Endometriosis, characterized by tissue similar to the lining of the uterus growing outside the uterus, can result in severe pelvic pain and fertility challenges, according to the World Health Organisation.
Acknowledging the undue scrutiny on women's physical appearance, Schumer emphasized the importance of self-love and acceptance. "Like every other woman/person some days I feel confident and good as hell and others I want to put a bag over my head," she shared.
"But I feel strong and beautiful and so proud of this TV show I created, wrote, starred in and directed," she added.
Schumer's openness about her battle with endometriosis is not new. In 2021, she underwent surgery to remove her uterus and appendix due to the condition.
Through her candid revelation, Schumer hopes to steer the focus towards her creative accomplishments and encourage discussions surrounding self-acceptance and appreciation for one's own body.
