The hashtag #BoycottSaiPallavi has been trending on X (formerly Twitter).
The actress is facing backlash over a video from 2022 which has resurfaced.
The clip doing the rounds on the internet, which has fanned the controversy, is from a January 2022 interview of the actor.
In her interview, Pallavi, who is known actress of the South film industry, was trying to underscore how she fails to understand the point of violence.
For instance, a translated excerpt of what she said, reportedly, reads, “People in Pakistan think our army is a terrorist group. But for us, it is them. So, the perspective changes. I don’t understand violence”.
Reports claim that she also referenced the violent incidents depicted in The Kashmir Files (2022) and cited an example of a Muslim driver transporting cattle who was allegedly lynched by a mob chanting “Jai Shri Ram”.
The statement has ignited a storm on social media, with many criticising the actress for equating perspectives on military forces across borders.
However, the examples shared by the actor to supplement her point have had quite the aggressive reception this time around as the clip resurfaced.
In the clip, Pallavi was trying to discuss the perception of violence between India and Pakistan, sparking outrage online.
The timing of this controversy speaks volumes, the row arises just as Pallavi prepares for two major projects.
She will star in the Tamil movie Amaran, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and produced by Kamal Haasan. The film features Sivakarthikeyan alongside Pallavi and is scheduled for release on October 31.
Additionally, she will portray Sita in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated Ramayana, opposite Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama.
While some have come to Pallavi’s defense, arguing that her comments were taken out of context, others continue to demand a boycott. Despite the controversy, the actress is also gearing up for her next pan-India film, Thandel, alongside Naga Chaitanya, slated for release next year.
