Hollywood actress Charlize Theron said that the release of the highly anticipated action drama "The Old Guard 2" was delayed by a post-production shutdown by Netflix, but assured fans that the sequel will be released soon.
"The Old Guard," which was written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, gained massive popularity as one of the most-watched movies on the streaming platform when it was released in 2020.
Theron, who portrayed Andy/Andromache the Scythian leading a team of immortal warriors fighting for justice, disclosed that filming for the sequel concluded around two years ago. However, it faced significant delays partly due to changes in Netflix's leadership.
"Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that, and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it," she told Variety.
The actors and writers' strikes also played a role in pushing back the film.
"They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I'm really excited about it. It's really good... It will come out soon... It's a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie," the Oscar winner added.
"The Old Guard" received acclaim for its impressive action scenes and musical score, featuring a strong female lead, upon its debut. The movie follows a small band of immortal soldiers, led by Andy, who have worked as mercenaries for centuries.
Their world is turned upside down when they encounter a new immortal woman and discover that a malevolent organization has proof of their immortality.
The second instalment was helmed by director Victoria Mahoney and welcomed Uma Thurman and Henry Golding to the returning cast, including Theron, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Theron, through her company Denver and Delilah, served as a producer for the action drama alongside Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger.
