The decision by the Madras Music Academy to confer the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award upon renowned Carnatic vocalist T.M. Krishna has ignited a firestorm within the classical music community.

Notable Carnatic vocalists Ranjani and Gayatri, alongside Harikatha exponent Dushyanth Sridhar, have withdrawn from the Music Academy's 2024 conference, expressing reservations regarding Krishna's ideologies and his impact on the traditional Carnatic music landscape.

Carnatic music, deriving its name from the Sanskrit term Karnātaka Sangītam and Tamil Isai, embodies the essence of traditional and codified music, pressing its classical heritage and scientific underpinnings.

The objections against TM Krishna's accolade stem from his vocal opinions and activism, which challenge the established norms of the Carnatic music fraternity.

Critics, including the musicians who have opted out of the Music Academy's conference, allege that Krishna has caused substantial harm to the Carnatic music sphere by disregarding the sentiments of many within the community, causing "immense damage to the Carnatic music world" and "willfully and happily" stomping over the sentiments of the music community.

Furthermore, Krishna's admiration for E.V. Ramasamy 'Periyar', a contentious social activist known for his radical perspectives on caste and religion, has exacerbated tensions.

Critics argue that overlooking Krishna's political and social stances, perceived as divisive by some, poses risks and undermines the traditional values of Carnatic music.

While the controversy has shaken the music community, it has also ignited fervent discussions on social media, with proponents from both sides airing their perspectives.

Some, like politician Kanimozhi, contend that the backlash against Krishna is unjustified and stems from a misinterpretation of Periyar's ideals and Krishna's intentions.

On the other hand, critics posit that Krishna's progressive politics and transformative approach to Carnatic music have alienated traditionalists and, consequently, separated the community.

Amid the tumult, the Music Academy stands resolute in its decision. The institution, in response to the protests, has underscored its faith in the integrity and accomplishments of T.M. Krishna.

The Academy views the award not only as recognition of musical prowess but also as an acknowledgment of a musician's bravery in questioning and reshaping the normative boundaries of classical music in India.
