Dev Patel's "Monkey Man," a revenge thriller set in India and released by Universal Pictures, made a strong debut in North America, opening in 3,029 theatres and earning an estimated $10.1 million.
The film marks Patel's modestly budgeted directorial debut and features him in a bloody, politically charged action spectacle. Initially dropped by Netflix, the film found support from Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, a revered Hindu deity known for strength, loyalty, and courage, "Monkey Man" draws parallels between Hindu mythology and contemporary superhero iconography, such as Superman.

The story follows Kid, portrayed by Patel, who earns a living in an underground fight club and later seeks revenge for his mother's tragic death by infiltrating the elite class of a city reminiscent of Mumbai.
Despite facing numerous challenges as the film's main star, co-writer, co-producer, and director, Dev Patel, now 33 years old, has demonstrated his resilience and talent throughout his career.
"Monkey Man" portrays Kid's journey as he seeks retribution against the oppressive leaders of his community in India, highlighting the struggles of the poor and the powerless against those in positions of authority.
