The ‘Dhurandhar’ phenomenon has hit fever pitch with Aditya Dhar’s latest spy thriller shattering global box office records within hours of its release. Although trade analysts had always predicted that ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ was going to be a formidable contender, the scale at which it has opened has left even the most seasoned industry insiders stunned.
Following its worldwide debut on Thursday, March 19, the film has effectively redefined the financial benchmarks for Indian cinema. The momentum began building as early as Wednesday with a series of paid previews — the largest ever staged in India — which alone raked in ₹43 crore net domestically and ₹75 crore gross worldwide.
This early surge allowed the Ranveer Singh-starrer to cruise past the ₹100 crore gross mark before its official opening day had even fully commenced. By Thursday, the film saw an unprecedented expansion into tier-2 and tier-3 cities, adding a staggering ₹102 crore net in a single day— the highest one-day haul ever recorded for a Hindi film.
This brought the total domestic net to ₹145 crore (₹174 crore gross) after just 24 hours of general release. The film’s dominance is not confined to the subcontinent. Since the advantage of the festive Ugadi and Gudi Padwa holidays boosted domestic sales, the international market, too, responded with equal fervour.
‘Dhurandhar 2’ secured nearly $7 million internationally on Thursday alone, pushing its total overseas haul past the $9 million mark. When combined, the global opening day figure stands at a monumental ₹240 crore gross, a result that thoroughly eclipses previous Bollywood records held by the likes of ‘Jawan’, ‘Pathaan’, and ‘Animal’.
Perhaps more significantly, the film has bypassed Bollywood benchmarks altogether to challenge the most successful pan-Indian productions of the last decade. Its opening day global total has surpassed the debuts of heavyweights such as ‘RRR’, ‘Baahubali 2’, and ‘KGF Chapter 2’.
With a high-octane cast including R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal and Sanjay Dutt, and following in the footsteps of a predecessor that is still drawing crowds three months after its December release, ‘Dhurandhar 2’ appears destined to set a new high-water mark for Indian film exports.
