Singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has secured the top spot on the UK’s list of 'Top 50 Asian Celebrities in the World', which was unveiled in London, following the success of his extensive live tour and box office hits.
At 40, the Punjabi star has surpassed last year's leader, Shah Rukh Khan, and has been ranked above notable talents from various fields including film, television, music, arts, and literature in the 2024 edition of the list published by the UK weekly ‘Eastern Eye’ on Friday.
Dosanjh has gained recognition not only for his hit tracks, including notable songs from films, but also for his significant international collaborations over the past year.
“The singing sensation accomplished the most successful world tour ever undertaken by any South Asian celebrity with his blockbuster ‘Dil-Luminati’ show,” remarked ‘Eastern Eye’ Entertainment Editor Asjad Nazir, who compiles the list each year.
“His groundbreaking performance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ set new standards for Indian music. Amidst all the musical achievements, the versatile star showcased his exceptional acting skills in films and took pride in promoting his Punjabi heritage. He was the talk of the town during what turned out to be a remarkable year,” he added.
Pop superstar Charli XCX, who has Indian heritage, came in second, narrowly losing the top position, after an incredible year that featured sold-out performances, seven Grammy nominations, and her now-iconic ‘Brat’ album, which sparked a significant global movement.
Coming in third, Allu Arjun broke box office records with this year's highest-grossing Indian film, ‘Pushpa: The Rule’, and made a notable impact on the cinema landscape in his country, while Dev Patel, positioned at fourth, established himself as a Hollywood force by writing, directing, producing, and starring in the hit film ‘Monkey Man’.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas secured the fifth spot for her ability to handle high-profile projects, which included both films and the commencement of work on the second season of the mega-budget series ‘Citadel’; actor Vijay, who appeared in this year's top Tamil movie and initiated a political party, ranks sixth, with singer Arijit Singh in seventh place.
