The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has taken three principal suspects into custody, including a freelance assistant editor, following the data theft and subsequent online leak of the film 'Jana Nayagan'.
According to an official statement, the arrests were carried out on April 15, following an extensive technical analysis and a thorough review of digital evidence. These latest detentions follow the arrest of six other individuals on April 11, who were caught uploading and distributing pirated versions of the film. For the time being, the police have chosen not to disclose the identities of those arrested as the investigation is still active.
On Thursday, investigators revealed that the main suspect was employed as a freelance assistant editor on a separate film project. He allegedly exploited this position to gain unauthorised access to the 'Jana Nayagan' reels at an editing studio, where he stole the raw data. This stolen footage was then processed into a full-length movie format and shared with accomplices, which triggered a massive circulation of the pirated film across the internet.
All three suspects have appeared in court and have been remanded to judicial custody. Following the event, the Cyber Crime Wing had issued a strong advisory to the general public, stating that the act of downloading, watching, or simply even forwarding the pirated content comes under a criminal offense and legal action would be taken against such people.
The movie starring Vijay, the actor turned politician, has seen a bumpy road from the initial stages to finally getting released. It was initially set to release by the month of January 2026 but the date has now been postponed owing to the Central Board of Film Certification not providing the required clearance.
