The legendary music executive and five-time Grammy Award winner Clive Davis has died at the age of 94, prompting an outpouring of tributes from the many artists whose careers he helped shape across more than five decades in the music industry. As news of his death spread on Monday, musicians from multiple generations paid tribute to the executive known simply as "Clive" throughout the business. According to a report, Davis passed away at his Manhattan residence after recently being hospitalised with an upper respiratory infection.

Bruce Springsteen reflected on the profound impact Davis had on his life, noting that at just 22 years old, his life was changed when Davis signed him to Columbia Records. Springsteen remembered him as a great man and a close friend who treated him with the same respect and kindness when he was a nobody as he did after all his success. Billy Joel also remembered Davis for his knack for recognising talent and championing songwriters, stating that Davis understood the power of contemporary music and undoubtedly enhanced the stature of the industry during his tenure as president of Columbia Records.

For Barry Manilow, the loss marked the end of a decades-long partnership. He shared that for fifty years they worked, created, argued, and celebrated together, noting that while some would call it business, to Clive it was always family. Similarly, hit songwriter Diane Warren shared an emotional tribute, stating that losing Davis felt like losing a father, and that no one would ever come close to what he achieved. Smith congratulated Davis for reinventing the music world as well as being a strong personal supporter, while Alicia Keys referred to him as a visionary who made dreams a reality and left his everlasting impression in the music world.

Jennifer Hudson, one of the artists most closely associated with Davis’s later career, emphasised that while nobody lives forever, his legacy would endure, describing the mogul as true family. Singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins credited Davis with launching his career by trusting his gut rather than just looking at the numbers, whilst Ray Parker Jr remembered him as a mentor who had recently written him a heartfelt birthday letter despite being unwell. Veteran producer Narada Michael Walden praised his belief in great songs and artists, while the legendary songwriting and production duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff highlighted Davis's crucial role in launching Philadelphia International Records through CBS, bringing the "Sound of Philadelphia" to a global audience.

Davis is considered one of the most successful record executives in his time as he made the labels 'Columbia Records', 'Arista Records' and 'J Records' reach new heights. Some of the superstars whom he helped grow their careers were Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Simon and Garfunkel, and Santana. During the late 1960s, he successfully steered 'Columbia Records' into the rock era. After leaving the label in 1973, he rebuilt his immense influence at Arista Records, where he famously oversaw the meteoric rise of Whitney Houston alongside numerous major pop, rock, and R&B acts.

Beyond his standard label achievements, Davis became world-famous for hosting the music industry's highly exclusive annual Grammy Week pre-party, which became an official Recording Academy event in 2009. The most recent gathering, held on January 31, featured performances from Olivia Dean, Laufey, Jelly Roll, Sombr, Art Garfunkel, and the K-Pop Demon Hunters stars. A recipient of five Grammy Awards, including the Recording Academy's Trustees Award in 2000, Davis leaves behind a monumental legacy that fundamentally helped define generations of popular music.
