‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has been officially renewed for a 23rd season, cementing its status as the longest-running medical drama in American television history. Created by Shonda Rhimes—also known for hit series like Scandal, Private Practice and Bridgerton—the show will also become ABC’s longest-running scripted primetime series.
The drama, which revolves around Meredith Grey, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, has featured original cast members Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) since its debut. However, the upcoming season will continue without longtime cast members Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, who
are set to depart following the season 22 finale on May 7.

In addition to starring, Pompeo also serves as an executive producer and narrator of the series, which follows the personal and professional lives of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Over the years, the show has showcased several beloved characters, including Cristina Yang (played by Sandra Oh), Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane).
First airing in 2005, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is expected to surpass 475 episodes with the new season. Despite numerous cast changes over the years, the series continues to resonate strongly with viewers.
The show more than doubles its initial broadcast audience of 2.22 million viewers when factoring in a week of streaming and delayed viewing. It also ranks among the top 15 network series—excluding live sports—within the key 18–49 demographic. Additionally, its extensive library, available on platforms like Hulu and Netflix, consistently performs well in Nielsen’s streaming ratings.
