In a very rare feat, Randeep Hooda starrer Swatantrya Veer Savarkar earned Rs 1.15 crore on its opening day. Hooda is in lead role in the biopic and has undergone massive physical transformation to make his character appear real.
The film is directed by Randeep Hooda which saw an overall occupancy of 15.40 per cent in the Hindi belt and a 100 per cent occupancy for Marathi shows on Friday.
The film’s trailer has already grabbed eyeballs and now a thumping opening has garnered the spotlight.
The film highlights the journey and struggles of freedom fighter Swatantrya Veer Savarkar and his contribution to India’s independence.
With Hooda as Veer Savarkar walking into the Kaala Paani prison with an impactful voiceover gives one goosebumps. “Hum sabne padha hai ki Bharat ko aazadi ahinsa se mili hai lekin yeh voh kahaani nahi hai (We have all read that India attained freedom through non-violence, but this is not that story).”
“I didn’t know so much about Vinayak Damodar Savarkar before I was approached for the film,” said Hooda.
“When I read up about him in detail, I was taken aback by his life and his influence on other freedom fighters of that time. And thought, we, as a nation, should know about him. So I took it upon myself to tell his story to the world. This film is a tribute to his undying spirit and unwavering commitment to the nation and about the contribution of armed revolution in India’s fight for Independence which he influenced so much. We will break many myths surrounding Veer Savarkar and, thus, honour his legacy with an honest portrayal of his character,” he added.
Apart from Hooda, the film also stars Ankita Lokhande and Amit Sial. It was released in two languages— Hindi and Marathi on March 22.
