The last episode of season two of "House of the Dragon" was leaked online just five days before its scheduled premiere, despite HBO's efforts to remove unauthorised clips and ensure that fans could watch the full episode on Sunday.
Variety reported that HBO attributed the leak to an unintentional sharing of clips by an international third-party distributor.
"We are aware that clips from the ‘House of the Dragon’ season finale have surfaced across social media platforms. The clips were posted after an unintentional release from an international third-party distributor.
"HBO is aggressively monitoring and removing clips from the internet, and fans can watch the episode in its entirety this Sunday night on HBO and (streamer) Max," the network said in a statement.
The second season of "House of the Dragon" suffered a leak on Tuesday night, with several scenes appearing on TikTok. A single TikTok account shared 14 videos and around half an hour of content from the unaired finale.
These videos managed to attract between 50,000 and 100,000 views by the time Variety reported on the incident. The TikTok account was banned approximately three hours after the clips were uploaded, but they had already been spread to other platforms like X and Reddit.
HBO's attempt to prevent piracy by not providing journalists with advance copies of the season two finale was unsuccessful.
Previously, the show's season one finale was also leaked online two days before its air date in October 2022. Game of Thrones, the parent series of House of the Dragon, suffered several such leaks in its eight-season run from 2011 to 2019.
