We’ve come a long way since actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas became the first Indian to grace the Met Gala in 2017 in a Ralph Lauren trench coat dress. This year clearly belongs to the men, as actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh and super star Shah Rukh Khan sashayed down the runway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in what is termed as fashion’s biggest night. The men, dressed to the nines to fit in this year’s theme: ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, made their much-anticipated debuts in looks that didn’t disappoint.
Of the two, Diljit – who wears his love for Punjab on his sleeve – seemed to have stood out in an outfit that represented his home state in an elaborate traditional attire embroidered with Gurmukhi characters and the map of the Punjab. Inspired by royalty, he also wore a jewel-studded turban with a feather, a lion-headed kirpan, a jewel-studded necklace, and an original Cartier watch.
King Khan’s black Sabyasachi suit was classic but drew mixed reactions despite the star’s typical suave look and warm demeanor. Meanwhile, actor Kiara Advani, who also made her debut at the Gala, channeled her inner goddess as she flaunted her baby bump in a gold and black Gaurav Gupta ensemble. Fans, however, were quick to note that her outfit closely resembled actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Cannes 2024 look.
This year’s invite-only guest list also includes businesswoman Isha Ambani, socialite Natasha Poonawala, Indian fashion designers Sabyasachi and Prabhal Gurung, international icons Rihanna, Cardi B, Emma Chamberlain, Zendaya, Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber among others. The star-studded event, which has continued to gain popularity in India, has sparked considerable excitement on social media, indicating growing interest.
What is the Met Gala?
Traditionally held on the first Monday of May, Met Gala started out as a fundraiser that was founded in 1948 by publicist Eleanor Lambert to encourage donations from the crème de la crème of New York. The benefit is formally known as the Costume Institute Benefit and dedicated to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute – formally named the Anna Wintour Costume Centre as a tribute to the American Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief. Wintour has been a chair member of the museum’s gala since 1995.
This year too, it was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Since the Met Gala marks the opening night of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit, it has a theme according to which invitees must dress.
A ticket to the much sought-after fashion spectacle now costs approximately $75,000, while a table can go for over $3,50,000.
