Fans of Kapil Sharma's brand of humour are in for a disappointment. The comedian's highly anticipated Netflix show, The Great Indian Kapil Show, has wrapped up its first season after only five episodes.
The news came as a surprise to many, considering the show's strong start on March 30th, 2024. The premiere episode boasted a star-studded guest list featuring the Kapoor family – Ranbir, Neetu, and Riddhima.
Subsequent episodes saw the likes of cricketers Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, actors Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra alongside director Imtiaz Ali, and Bollywood heartthrob Aamir Khan.
The announcement came via Archana Puran Singh, Sharma's co-star, who shared a picture of a cake from the sets on her Instagram story with the caption "Season Wrap." Speaking to Pinkvilla, Puran Singh confirmed the show's hiatus, describing the filming experience as "great fun and celebration."
While Netflix has yet to officially comment on the reasons behind the show's short run, speculation abounds.
Some reports suggest the five-episode season was always the plan, with a potential renewal dependent on viewership figures.
Others hint at creative differences or scheduling conflicts within the cast.
The news comes amidst rumours of a hefty price tag for the show's production.
According to a report by Zee Hindustan, Sharma himself allegedly commanded a staggering Rs 26 crore for the five episodes, translating to over Rs 5 crore per episode.
The report further claims that Sunil Grover, Sharma's long-time collaborator who rejoined the cast after a well-publicised falling out, received Rs 25 lakh per episode.
Archana Puran Singh, known for her spot between the audience, is reported to have earned Rs 10 lakh per episode, while Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, and Rajiv Thakur allegedly received Rs 10 lakh, Rs 7 lakh, and Rs 6 lakh respectively.
