Filmmaker Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' has been selected as India's official entry for the 2025 Oscars. Rao expressed her full support for those who spoke up for justice for the deceased medic of RG Kar Hospital.
During a Ladies Study Group event at the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Rao told PTI that she considers the August 9 incident "regrettable and frightening."
"I stand in solidarity with all the women, all the people who have come out on the streets of Kolkata and protested and raised their voice to have safer working conditions for women," she said.
“Students, doctors and everyone in society stood in solidarity and protested, I am with them," Rai said.
Rao mentioned that the selection of 'Laapataa Ladies' as the official entry for the Oscars next year is considered an honour in itself.
Released on March 1, the film tells the tale of two young brides who become separated from the same train and lead to a series of misadventures.
About her next move, she said more screening opportunities would have to be created for the film. “There are several excellent films from many other countries, big-time directors are in contention. There are issues like getting (jury) members to watch the film." At the Ladies Study Group discussion 'Ladies who lead', Rao said several issues she had touched in 'Laapataa Ladies' are faced by women every day.
“Every stage, every level, every class (of women) can connect when it comes to their identity. All of us find ourselves in some way or the other in this film," she said.
