Sajid Ali’s 2018 romantic film Laila Majnu has recently received a new lease of life after a not-so-great performance at the box office in 2018.
It was re-released this Friday and collected Rs 30 lakh upon its opening, which went up to Rs 1 crore on Sunday.
The film, directed by Sajid Ali and co-written and presented by his brother Imtiaz Ali, was co- produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali’s former wife Preety.
Based on the classic romance of Laila and Majnu, the story has been changed slightly from the original cult classic.
In the film, Laila belongs to a reputed family in town and falls for a boy, Qais, belonging to another rich family. But their families do not agree to their marriage due to some ongoing legal dispute between them.
So this is your customary story of star- crossed lovers. Tripti Dimrii had her first lead role in the film when it was produced back in 2018. She made her debut in the thriller, Mom.
Her co- star Avinash Tiwary has studied at the New York Film Academy and has a theatre background. He has also won a number of awards.
The original Layla and Majnun is a 7th century story of Arabic poet Qais ibn al- Mulawwah and his lover Layla bint Mahdi. It is of Arabic origin.
This story of intrigue and romance has continued to excite the fantasy of people over the ages.
