Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he actively conceals his global celebrity status from his young son, and intends to maintain the deception for as long as humanly possible. The actor, who shot to fame as a child starring in the titular role of the blockbuster 'Harry Potter' film franchise, has since built a diverse career with projects including 'Weird: The Al Yankovic Story'.
Despite his inescapable household name, his three-year-old son remains entirely oblivious to his father’s day job. Speaking to the media, Radcliffe recounted a comical near-miss that occurred whilst watching the Winter Olympics at home with his long-term partner, the actress Erin Darke. The actor had momentarily stepped out of the room when a television commercial for his latest 'Broadway' production flashed onto the screen.
His son, catching a glimpse of his father on the television set, was utterly baffled. Radcliffe explained that the toddler turned to his mother in a tone of voice that suggested he was questioning his own sanity, asking if his father had just left. Because Radcliffe had exited the room only moments prior, the child logically assumed his father had somehow physically migrated straight into the television.
The couple, who welcomed their son in April 2023, have always been fiercely protective of their family's privacy. Radcliffe noted that explaining standard professions to a young child is a far more straightforward task. While it is simple to contextualise what a doctor, firefighter, or police officer does, explaining the concept of acting to a toddler is entirely abstract.
He joked that trying to explain that he acts out stories for a living proves just how ridiculous the profession can sound to a child. Given that his son is currently nowhere near grasping what he actually does for a living, the actor remains determined to keep him in the dark.
