The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has summoned key executives from Netflix India to address allegations of explicit content accessible to minors on the streaming platform.

The summons, directed to Monica Shergill, Vice President of Content, and Ambika Khurana, Policy Head, follow a complaint filed by Uday Mahurkar of the Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation.

The NCPCR’s notice, which was made public on social media, outlines serious concerns regarding the nature of content available on Netflix.

According to the complaint, the streaming service is alleged to feature explicit material, including detailed depictions of sexual acts and nudity, which is accessible to underage viewers.

Specific scenes cited include graphic sexual activity involving multiple participants and other disturbing imagery.

The notice references Section 11 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012, which prohibits the display of pornographic material to children.

It asserts that the availability of such content on Netflix constitutes a violation of this law, given the unrestricted access minors have to the platform.

Netflix India has been instructed to appear before the NCPCR on July 29 at 3 pm for an in-person hearing. The Commission's move underscores its commitment to addressing concerns over content accessibility and child protection.

The complaint follows previous actions by the Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation, led by former Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar.

In June, the foundation called for an immediate ban on both Netflix and X (formerly Twitter), accusing them of distributing pornographic content that allegedly threatens India’s cultural values.

They had previously compiled a dossier of explicit material from both platforms to support their case.

Netflix India has yet to issue a response regarding the allegations or the summons.

The platform, which offers a vast array of global content, has not clarified which specific shows or movies are the subject of the complaint.
