Netflix has commissioned an animated series based on the popular Ghostbusters franchise. Variety reported that Elliott Kalan will be both writer and executive producer of the show.
The animated series, previously rumoured to be in development in 2022, will maintain a similar tone to the recent “Ghostbusters” films.
Sony Pictures Animation is backing the series, with Ghost Corps' Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan serving as executive producers. The original "Ghostbusters" film premiered in 1984, directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.
The movie featured Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City, and was followed by a sequel in 1989.
In 2016, a reboot directed by Paul Feig introduced an all-female team of Ghostbusters portrayed by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.
In 2021, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" was co-written and directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman. This movie served as a direct sequel to the first two films, with a focus on a new generation of Ghostbusters while paying tribute to the original cast and storyline.
The sequel, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," was released in theatres in March of this year.
