The cyber division of the Maharashtra police has issued a notice to the online ticketing platform BookMyShow urging it to enforce stringent measures, including the sale of tickets linked to specific names for the January concerts of the British band Coldplay and other events.
According to an official, the notice originated from Maharashtra Cyber to safeguard fans purchasing tickets from online services.
There is a growing number of complaints surfacing on online forums and social media regarding difficulties encountered while trying to book tickets for these high-profile concerts and events through online means, he explained.
Many individuals have reported that websites become unresponsive during crucial booking periods, he noted, which results in the ticket black market, with prices sometimes inflated to ten times their original value.
The Maharashtra Cyber determined that the actions taken by the platforms to mitigate such issues are inadequate, stated the official.
A PIL has also been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking guidelines to curb black marketing and ticket scalping at major events, in the backdrop of alleged foul play during the online tickets sale for Coldplay’s highly anticipated concert in Navi Mumbai in January 2025.
The PIL said there are several irregularities and illegalities during the sale of tickets for major events, such as concerts, live shows and so on.
Such irregularity and illegality was witnessed in September when tickets for the Coldplay concert were made available on the BookMyShow platform, it said.
