Gomez had dropped a simple “lol,” which netizens interpreted as sarcasm.

Singer-actor Selena Gomez is setting the record straight amid reports suggesting that she threw shade at her longtime friend and fellow singer Taylor Swift.

The controversy started when MTV shared two Instagram pictures of pop sensation Taylor Swift at the New York Knicks versus San Antonio Spurs game at Madison Square Garden on June 10. The first photo showed the 14-time Grammy winner hugging Mariska Hargitay, who looks exhausted after a long, nail-biting few hours of cheering on the NYC team, while the second featured Swift jumping excitedly alongside Este Haim.

In the comments, Gomez had dropped a simple “lol,” which netizens interpreted as sarcasm.

In a series of Instagram stories, Gomez clarified that she would never insult her friends and that her comment was misunderstood. "Woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends, nor was it an insult,” the 33-year-old wrote.

She went on to explain the Instagram Story she had posted the previous night in which she congratulated the Knicks following their 107-106 victory over the Spurs and had written: "Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent. What a comeback. So funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol."

Gomez insisted it was all about the opposing team. "Second I bet my friends on the game," she shared. "The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise."

The Rare Beauty founder reminded social media users: “also .. It’s a basketball game.”

Notably, Selena and Taylor have been friends for two decades, supporting each other through personal and professional highs and lows. Their bond was beautifully evident when Taylor stood by Selena's side during her wedding to Benny Blanco, joining the celebration of her best friend's most important life moments.
