Veteran actor Shabana Azmi, while attending the 2024 International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) in Abu Dhabi, touched upon the historical suppression of women in India and the persistent struggles faced by women in the film industry, particularly in light of the Justice Hema Committee Report.

The report highlights the systemic harassment and exploitation faced by women in Malayalam cinema, underscoring not only incidents of sexual harassment but also the lack of basic workplace facilities and the significant gender pay gap.

Azmi emphasised that the journey of Indian women has been marked by a paradox of both progression and suppression, a reflection of India's own dualities. Her comments resonate deeply with the issues raised in the Hema Committee report, which shone a spotlight on the widespread mistreatment and unequal treatment of female artists.

Azmi, an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, also discussed her desire for the re-release of her 1982 film Arth, which centres around women's empowerment. As she celebrates 50 years in Indian cinema, Azmi continues to be a voice for change and representation, with her recent work in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani also adding to her illustrious career.
