Shekhar Kapur named Festival Director for IFFI

Veteran Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur to Lead IFFI.


Veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has been appointed as the Festival Director for the 55th and 56th editions of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held in Goa. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

 

Shekhar Kapur, renowned for his work in Indian and international cinema, brings a wealth of experience to this role. He is celebrated for his influential films such as "Masoom" and "Mr. India," both of which have left a lasting impact on Indian cinema. "Masoom," released in 1983, was a family drama featuring Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, and it introduced a young Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar to the film industry. His 1987 film "Mr. India," starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, is particularly noteworthy for its commercial success and enduring popularity.

 

Kapur's career also includes significant contributions to international cinema. His film "Bandit Queen," a biographical drama about Phoolan Devi, received critical acclaim.

 

He gained further recognition with his British film "Elizabeth," which earned him nominations for Best Director at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes. The film's sequel, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," won Cate Blanchett her first Academy Award for Best Actress.

 

In 2023, Kapur served as the chairperson of the International Competition Jury at the 54th International Film Festival of India, held from November 20 to 28. His involvement in this prestigious role underscored his deep engagement with the global film community.

 

Apart from his achievements in Indian cinema, Kapur directed "The Four Feathers," one of Heath Ledger's final films before his untimely death. This epic film further highlights Kapur’s versatility and international appeal as a filmmaker.

 

As the Festival Director for the upcoming editions of IFFI, Kapur is expected to bring his vast experience and creative vision to the festival, contributing to its legacy as a prominent platform for celebrating cinema from around the world.
