Actor Vijay unveils Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s flag at party headquarters in Chennai on August 22.

The Election Commission of India has recognised Tamil superstar Vijay’s political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The actor announced the news, hinting on contesting 2026 state polls.

“We applied for our party’s recognition with the Election Commission on 2nd February. After legally scrutinising our petition, our nation’s Election Commission has registered our Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and approved our party to participate in electoral politics,” Vijay said.

He asserted, “This is the first door that has opened to us to achieve victory in various directions.”

Thalapathy Vijay, who has a massive fan base in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other southern states, announced the formation of a political party in February, asserting that the outfit will follow the path of social justice. He had emphasised that the party will strive for “fundamental political change” with a “transparent, caste-free, and corruption-free” administration.

Two weeks ago, Vijay unveiled TVK’s party flag and symbol. The flag is red and maroon on the top and bottom, and yellow in the middle, featuring two elephants and a Vaagai flower, which symbolises victory. TVK also launched its flag anthem on the party’s social media handles.

On Sunday, the actor urged his party members to wait for the state-level meeting where the party ideology will soon be propagated. Following the Election Commission’s recognition, TVK is gearing up for meetings at various levels.

Upon the launch, Vijay stated that the party’s goal is to contest and win the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. Though TVK was announced before the Lok Sabha elections, the party did not contest the elections or declare its support for anyone.
