Farmers who tried to break the barricades placed at the state's border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala were tossed with tear gas shells by the Haryana Police here today.

Farmers attempting to breach barricades at the Punjab-Haryana border in Shambhu near Ambala attacked by police with tear gas shells.


Farmers who tried to break the barricades placed at the state's border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala were tossed with tear gas shells by the Haryana Police here today. The authorities near the Shambhu border also detained a few farmers, the official sources confirmed.

Haryana Police hurled tear gas canisters against the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protesters at the border in state’s Jind district as well. Water cannons too were deployed there. Seven police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police, were brought to the Ambala government hospital. Some farmers are also reported hurt.

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora visited the Tikri border on Tuesday to inspect the security arrangements put in place in view of the farmers' march to the national capital. Arora was accompanied by Special Commissioner, Law and Order, Madhup Tiwari and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram. According to officials, more than 5,000 personnel of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur border areas to maintain law and order.

The Punjab and Haryana High court Tuesday issued notices to the Centre, and the states of Haryana and Punjab, on two separate petitions filed pertaining to the farmers' Delhi Chalo march. One of the petitioners has sought directions from the court to stay all "obstructive" actions by the governments of Haryana and Punjab and the Union government against the farmers' protest, while the other has pleaded for directions to ensure no highway is blocked by the protesters and those who do so are punished. The petitions came up for hearing before a bench of Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji.

The Delhi Metro regulated passenger entry and exit at nine stations on Tuesday by shutting some gates in view of the farmers' proposed march to the national capital. The commuters were allowed to enter or exit these stations through other gates. Official sources said the gates have been shut as part of security arrangements as requested by the Delhi Police. The stations where one or more gates are closed are: Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Udyog Bhawan, Janpath, Barakhamba Road, Lok Kalyan Marg and Khan Market, a senior official said.

Near Shambhu, the stand-off between the protesters and the police continued for hours as the area filled up with tear gas smoke. Some protesters were detained by the Haryana Police, sources said. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are spearheading the `Delhi Chalo’ agitation to put pressure on the Centre for their demands, including a law on minimum support price for crops and loan waivers.

The border was shut by blocking the movement on both carriageways with five-foot-long cement blocks along with multi-layer of barricades. The Delhi Police also closed all the entry and exit points of the nearby streets and villages connecting the highway near Tikri Metro Station. However, the metro services on the Green Line is still working for commuting purpose.

Security has been heightened along Rajasthan’s borders with Haryana and Punjab and mobile internet suspended in three districts in view of the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march. Inspector General of Police, Bikaner Range, Om Prakash visited the Ratanpura border and reviewed the arrangements. He spoke to police personnel and issued necessary instructions. He said mobile internet has been suspended for the day in Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar and Anupgarh districts and borders have been sealed.

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij speaking on the farmers' protest stated, "They wanted to talk to the central government, but the central government (officials) has come here to talk. Talks have been held twice and they are not denying having further talks with them. Still, they are adamant about going to Delhi...Why do they want to go to Delhi? It seems that they have some other motive...We will not let peace be disturbed. They should withdraw their call."

The central Delhi has been put under a heavy security cover in view of the farmers' protest, with personnel in anti-riot gears deployed strategically and metal and concrete barricades regulating access to several key roads, causing hardship to commuters. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday condemned the firing of tear gas shells at protesting farmers in Haryana, dubbing it as “BJP’s brutal assault” on cultivators. The Haryana Police lobbed tear gas shells at farmers who tried to break barricades set up at the state's border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala, as growers demanding a law on minimum support price marched toward Delhi. “How can our country progress when the farmers are attacked with tear gas shells for fighting for their basic rights? I strongly condemn the brutal assault on our farmers by the BJP,” Banerjee said in a post on X.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed near the border as farmers deployed tractors to remove cemented blocks which had been placed as part of the barricading by the Haryana police on the Ghaggar river bridge to prevent them from marching forward. However, the Haryana police said tear gas shells were being used to control the situation as protestors were pelting stones at police personnel.
