At least one person was killed and six injured in what's being described as a mass shooting at a park where a crowd had gathered in New York's Rochester on Sunday evening.
Rochester police rushed to Maplewood Park after getting a 911 call about gunfire erupting at a gathering at around 6:20 pm to find several people with gunshot wounds and others fleeing in panic, media outlets reported.
A 20-year-old person died and one was critically injured, police said. Others had been hospitalised with minor injuries.
Rochester Police Capt Greg Bello was quoted by media outlets at saying, "We don’t know how many people were shooting. We are trying to work our way through that. We are trying to work our way through as many witnesses as we can.”
The identities or number of shooters was not revealed.
The incident comes close on the heels of two recent shootings in public areas in the US.
One person received gunshot wounds after shooting wasa reported from inside a shopping mall in Columbia, Maryland on Saturday at around 6.10 pm. The victim was reported to be 17-year-old Angelo Little of Columbia.
According to media reports Howard County Police officers said they believed Little had been specifically targeted and that the shooter had simply walked out of the mall.
In the other shooting last week, police responding to a 911 call in Milwaukee found a A 17-year-old girl dead and eight others wounded in a park at around 12.30 am.
Police said the teenagers had gathered for a party when gunfire erupted.
