The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that 64 people, including 13 children, were killed in an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Al Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur’s capital, Al Deain, on Friday night.
In a post on X, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that multiple patients, two female nurses, and one male doctor were among those killed.
A total of 89 people were injured, along with eight other healthcare staff members. The strikes destroyed the hospital’s paediatric, maternity, and emergency departments, rendering the facility completely non-functional and depriving the city of essential medical services.
Tedros noted that this incident has pushed the total number of fatalities from attacks on health facilities during Sudan’s war above 2,000.
He added that, in the nearly three-year conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF, at least 2,036 health workers have died across 213 documented attacks on healthcare facilities. Although no side has officially claimed responsibility, the attack is widely attributed to the RSF, which has a documented history of targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals.
The war erupted in mid-April 2023 and has triggered one of the world’s most severe man-made humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands killed and over 12 million people displaced from their homes.
“Enough blood has been spilt. Enough suffering has been inflicted,” Tedros said, adding, “The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians, health workers, and humanitarians.”
