A rescue helicopter hovers over the Potomac River following a mid-air collision between a commercial airplane and a military helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport, Washington, DC.

At least eighteen bodies have been recovered following a mid-air collision between a commercial airliner and a military helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport late Wednesday night, plunging both aircraft into the Potomac River.

The collision involved American Airlines Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines, and a Sikorsky H-60 Army Blackhawk helicopter.

The airline’s regional jet, which had 60 passengers and four crew members, had departed from Wichita, Kansas.

The military helicopter, carrying four soldiers, had flown out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, a US defence official confirmed.

Rescue teams, including DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, have been working through the night to search for survivors among the 64 people potentially involved.

Authorities are combing the river and surrounding areas for debris and additional victims. Fireboats and emergency personnel remain on the scene.

A video of the crash was shared on social media, sparking widespread criticism, with many users blaming the advanced US military helicopter for negligence.

The footage, which quickly went viral, shows the aftermath of the mid-air collision.

US President Donald Trump extended condolences to the victims’ families and lauded the efforts of first responders.

“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” he stated.

According to sources, the collision occurred just off the runways of Reagan National, prompting the immediate suspension of all air traffic, including take-offs and landings. Debris from the crash was scattered across the Potomac River, and recovery efforts remain underway.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, stating that the crash took place around 9 pm local time. Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the tragic collision.

American Airlines issued a statement acknowledging the incident involving its American Eagle flight from Wichita, expressing support for those affected.

“Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, and their families. We are working closely with authorities as the situation unfolds,” the airline said.

US Vice President JD Vance urged Americans to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts.

“Please say a prayer for everyone involved in the mid-air collision near Reagan Airport this evening. We’re monitoring the situation, but for now, let’s hope for the best,” she said.

Senator Ted Cruz also confirmed fatalities but noted the exact number remained unclear.

He posted on X, “I am closely monitoring the situation at DCA, and I will receive a briefing from the FAA tomorrow. While we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities. Please join Heidi and me in praying for all involved as the search and rescue is underway.”

The cause of the collision remains unknown, and officials have stated that further updates will be provided once the investigation progresses.
