A founding member of terror group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) and the deputy of 26/11 Mumbai Attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed has passed away. Known to be Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, who was in the custody of the Pakistani government, died owing to cardiac arrest, as per the United Nations.
According to the United Nations Security Council’s Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee, Bhuttavi died on 29 May last year in a city called Muridke in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
When Saeed was detained, reportedly, Bhuttavi served as the acting emir, managing the group’s deliverables and making independent decisions on his behalf.
Bhuttavi instructed its members to issue fatwas and authorise the organisation’s operations. He gave lectures on martyrdom to prepare men for the Mumbai terror attack. Over 150 people died in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
He even handled the madrassah network of LeT and played a primary role in establishing an organisational base in Lahore in 2002.
As per the information received from the United Nations committee, Saeed, 73, is still in the custody of the Pakistan government. He is serving a 78-year imprisonment sentence, for his involvement in terror financing cases.
