Military escalations between Russia and Ukraine have entered a new phase, with both sides actively targeting civilian and energy infrastructure to inflict as much damage as possible.
Russia on Thursday launched a massive retaliatory missile and drone strike on Kyiv, weeks after Kyiv carried out attacks on Russian oil facilities and other infrastructure.
The latest attack has killed 27 people and injured at least 70 others, according to local authorities, making it one of the deadliest assaults on the Ukrainian capital in recent months.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described it as the worst Russian attack on the capital in more than four years of the war.
The Russian Ministry of Defence, in its latest media briefing, said over 500 drones and 70 missiles were used in the attack meant to target Kyiv’s drone and weapons facilities.
While the two sides defend their decisions to attack each other, it is the civilians in Kyiv and Russian-controlled territory that bear the brunt of the attacks.
Earlier, Ukraine drone strikes killed dozens of elementary school children in one of the brazen assaults on civilian targets.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had said after the attack that Russia would respond decisively.
What is happening in Russia and Ukraine is nothing less than war crimes, but the international community has remained silent over the issue, completely neglecting the plight of the people living in the tormented war zones.
It is well known from several OSINT sources that Ukraine is building drones, missiles, and other hardware in factories that are embedded in civilian zones, particularly in and around Kyiv.
While on the other side, Russia keeps the frontline intact in the annexed zones to make sure that they suffer less damage in Ukrainian attacks. The death toll steadily rose during the day and may yet climb higher, with about 70 people admitted to hospital and rescuers still searching in the ruins in the latest attacks.
The situation, despite both sides controlling the media narrative, remains fragile and on the verge of escalating into a full-fledged regional war in Europe, which could have a devastating impact on global peace and stability, especially when one remains one of the two largest nuclear-armed nations.
