At least three people were injured in a shootout between two rival groups during Eid celebrations in the US city of Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Sources said as many as “30 shots were fired during the said incident, which resulted in chaos and sent many families fleeing for safety.”
The incident occurred during an Eid al-Fitr celebration.
According mosque's website, the bullets were fired on the west side of the city near the Philadelphia mosque at 2:30 pm, just as the morning festivities were scheduled to end.
Sources were quoted by the local media as saying that the incident was not likely to be ideologically motivated or targeted.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J Bethel said at a news conference that five people, including a minor, had been arrested for links to the incident, which was being investigated further.
Authorities said a 22-year-old man was wounded in the stomach, while a 15-year-old was hurt in his finger. The two patients were taken to nearby hospitals and were listed in stable condition.
Another 15-year-old with a gun was shot and disarmed by a responding officer, according to officials. The teenager was then taken to a local hospital.
The administration has extended the closure of the schools in the vicinity following the shooting.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X that Pennsylvania State Police have contacted Philly police and offered "full support" into the shooting investigation.
"Eid should always be a time of joy for our Muslim neighbours — and I grieve for every member of the Philadelphia Muslim community whose celebration was shattered by gun violence today," he said.
