Mild tremors shook Kolkata and several parts of eastern India on Friday morning following a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Bangladesh. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 10:08 am IST, with its epicentre located 14 kilometres west-southwest of Narsingdi in Bangladesh.
Residents across Kolkata and adjoining areas reported feeling mild tremors, with many noticing fans and wall hangings swaying slightly during the brief shaking.
Soon after the quake, people in Kolkata and neighbouring regions rushed to social media to post videos and photographs of the moment. Visuals widely shared online showed people quickly stepping out of homes and offices as a precautionary measure when the tremors were felt.
Several clips captured the exact instant of the earthquake, clearly depicting swinging ceiling fans and wall fixtures moving back and forth.
The tremors were also experienced in other districts of West Bengal, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar. As of now, there are no reports of any injuries or casualties resulting from the earthquake.
More details are still awaited.
