A tragic shooting at a Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday left five people dead, including the suspected shooter, and injured at least five others, authorities reported.
Children were among those killed, according to officials.
The incident happened at Abundant Life Christian School, a private school with about 400 students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, the Madison Police Department stated on social media.
During a press conference, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed that five people, including the suspected shooter, lost their lives. The suspect, identified as a juvenile, was found dead by police upon their arrival at the scene.
At least five injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, Barnes added.
Social media footage from the scene showed a large emergency response involving police, ambulances, and fire trucks.
"Multiple injuries have been reported," Madison Police said in a social media post, adding that the investigation is still active and ongoing.
Details about the shooter or their motive have not yet been released.
The shooting highlights the ongoing concern over gun violence and school safety in the United States. This year alone, there have been 322 school shootings, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database.
This marks the second-highest yearly total since the database began tracking incidents in 1966, surpassed only by last year’s record of 349 school shootings.
