An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 shook southern Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture on Thursday.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the earthquake on Thursday was 20 kilometres northeast of Nichinan city, at a depth of 25 kilometres.
The officials issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake.
According to NERV, a Japanese earthquake monitoring agency, the earthquake was reported in the Hyuga-Nada Sea.
Officials have warned that waves of up to 1 meter are expected in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Those who live near coastal areas, rivers, or lakes have been advised to relocate to safer locations immediately.
