Florida State University (FSU) was placed under lockdown on Thursday afternoon following reports of an active shooter near the Student Union on its Tallahassee campus. The university swiftly issued an emergency alert as law enforcement agencies and campus police responded to the scene.
The initial alert, distributed to students, faculty, and staff, emphasised the seriousness of the situation and instructed the campus community to take immediate protective action.
“Police are on scene or en route. Remain sheltered in place until further notice. Secure all doors and windows, stay out of sight, and be prepared to implement additional safety measures,” the message stated.
In the minutes that followed, a series of follow-up alerts reiterated the urgency of the shelter-in-place directive, with officials stressing the importance of remaining indoors and maintaining situational awareness.
One of the updates read: “This is an emergency message for the Florida State University Tallahassee Campus. Continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter report at the Student Union. Monitor official channels for further updates.”
The university also issued emergency contact information, urging anyone in immediate danger or in need of assistance to call 911 or reach out directly to the Florida State University Police Department (FSUPD) at 850-644-1234.
In light of the developing situation, FSU announced the cancellation of all classes and campus events scheduled for Thursday. University officials also requested that individuals not currently on campus avoid the area until authorities declare it safe.
