Algeria and South Africa sign strategic agreements for growth.

Algeria and South Africa have strengthened their bilateral ties by signing a series of agreements aimed at enhancing their strategic partnership. The signing ceremony, held at the Algerian Presidency, was attended by both Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is on a three-day visit to Algeria. This visit coincided with the seventh session of the joint high committee between the two nations.

The two countries have signed five cooperation agreements covering several important sectors, including agriculture, space technology, entrepreneurship, and economic cooperation.

These agreements aim to promote innovation in farming, foster technological exchange between their space agencies, and stimulate economic growth through stronger partnerships in entrepreneurship.

The agreements also focus on enhancing joint economic cooperation to boost trade and investment, as well as strengthening legal and judicial frameworks to facilitate bilateral relations.

In his remarks following the signing ceremony, President Tebboune underscored the long-standing relationship between Algeria and South Africa, describing their cooperation as “close” and their relationship as “strategic.”

He emphasised that their discussions had covered a wide range of regional and international issues, including the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the situations in the Sahel, Libya, Sudan, and Central and Southern Africa.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to resolving crises through political and diplomatic means, without external interference.

In addition, the two countries agreed to work together to push for reforms in the United Nations Security Council, advocating for Africa to secure two permanent seats, reflecting the shared vision of both Algeria and South Africa in advancing Africa’s position on the global stage.

President Ramaphosa, for his part, expressed South Africa’s desire to deepen its relationship with Algeria, reflecting their historical ties.

He highlighted the importance of enhancing trade relations between the two nations and underscored the significance of fostering African unity, with a focus on establishing a free trade zone across the continent.

Furthermore, Ramaphosa called for adherence to international law regarding Palestine and voiced solidarity with oppressed peoples worldwide.

The visit also included discussions on military cooperation, with key meetings taking place between Algerian Army Chief of Staff General Said Chengriha and South African Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga.

These discussions touched on a range of topics, including energy, irrigation, trade, and industry.
