Tensions flared in the Maldives as an altercation erupted between groups of Maldivians and Indians, resulting in two individuals sustaining injuries.

According to reports, the incident unfolded near Central Park in Hulhumale, situated approximately 7 km northeast of Male, around 9:00 pm on Monday.

The detainment of a Maldivian suspect followed the skirmish, as confirmed by local authorities.

While details regarding the identities of the injured parties remained undisclosed, it was reported that the individuals with serious injuries were promptly transported to Hulhumale Hospital for medical attention.

Fortunately, they were discharged post-treatment.

Police investigations revealed that the clash originated within the confines of the park, pitting Maldivians against Indians. Authorities are actively pursuing further inquiries into the matter.

This incident comes against the backdrop of India's diminished ranking in visitor numbers to the Maldives, slipping to sixth place in 2024 from its prior position as the top contributor in 2023.

Such a decline has prompted concerns within the local tourism industry, highlighting potential ramifications for the tourism-dependent economy of the Indian Ocean archipelago.

The strained relations between India and the Maldives have seen recent escalations, particularly following derogatory remarks made against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by three Maldivian officials on social media platforms.

These remarks came in response to Modi's posts showcasing the picturesque Lakshadweep Islands on India's western coast.

According to statistics from the Maldives Tourism Ministry, the influx of tourists to the island nation reached over 17 lakh in 2023, with Indians comprising the largest demographic, followed closely by visitors from Russia and China.
