Tech giant Apple may be intensifying plans to prepare a successor for CEO, Tim Cook, amid reports that he may step down as chief executive next year.
A leading financial daily reported on Friday that John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, is widely being seen as Cook’s most likely successor, if information from several people familiar with the discussions is anything to go by.
Cook, who turned 65 on November 1, has led Apple through its most profitable era since taking over from Steve Jobs in 2011. From launching Apple Pay to Apple watch, which was introduced 10 years ago, Apple’s stock rose almost 1800 per cent under Cook’s leadership. The company has since expanded into Apple TV Plus, producing award-winning films and shows.

Nearly 14 years later, the company’s board and senior executives may be looking to announce a new CEO before Apple’s earnings report in late January, covering the holiday season.
However, Cook’s stepping down may be completely speculative, since no official confirmation has arrived.
Of the various contenders, Ternus, 50, is said to mirror Cook’s age at the time of taking over while also offering deep technical expertise.
